This site summarizes the motivation, challenges and results of the MIT Space Systems Laboratory's research contributions to NGST. The research program makes use of our existing expertise in the field of lightly damped precision space structures, controls and optics and the integrated modeling of those systems. The research motivation is based on the challenges of a large, deployable space observatory that has to achieve milli-arcsecond pointing accuracy and acceptable wavefront error performance in the presence of dynamic on-board disturbances. It will not be possible to test the fully deployed observatory in a 1-g environment, therefore detailed modeling and simulation are necessary steps in order to reduce technological risks. Details for the research tasks in FY99 can be found in the statement of work. A list of informal reports, publications and personnel involved are also included.
